Baseball Batting Gloves

Best Baseball Batting Gloves – Review and Buyer’s Guide

Baseball, America’s national pastime, has a long and illustrious history, dating back to the 1840s.  Developed and derived from two English games, Rounders and Cricket, it was brought to the Americas by English colonists. Baseball continued to progress as a sport and to gain popularity across the US.

As the game evolved, so did baseball equipment.  One of the latest developments in baseball equipment is the batting glove, which will be the topic of this equipment review.

Batting gloves typically consist of a leather palm, and nylon or other man-made fiber for the back of the glove.  They are usually worn on both hands, and provide protection from blisters, heat or cold, giving the batter an improved grip on the bat, while absorbing the shock from hitting the ball.

Batting gloves are an essential piece of equipment in the game today and are worn by virtually all players at any level of the sport.  They have evolved to the point where runners wear them while on base, to prevent hand abrasion while sliding.  Many fielders wear them on their glove hand for additional padding and protection.

Who Was the First to Wear Batting Gloves?

As with most things in baseball, there are conflicting stories about the original use of batting gloves.  Some credit their use in spring training by Bobby Thompson of the NY Giants in 1949, while others point to Ted Williams wearing them in batting practice in 1953.  In both cases, golf gloves were used, as gloves made specifically for batting were not yet developed.  Most sources agree that Ken Harrelson was the player who first wore batting gloves in a game, but there is disagreement as to the year – 1964 vs. 1968.  Rusty Staub was the first to wear them on a daily basis, and their use became nearly universal in the 1980s, spearheaded by a working arrangement between Mike Schmitt and the Franklin Sporting Goods Company.

As the stage for baseball has grown from America to a global platform, the demand for baseball equipment has grown with it.  The sport is immensely popular in Latin and South America, both of which provide talented players to the major leagues.  It is also very popular in Asia and will be featured in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.  The Little League World Series also has teams from around the world in their annual competition.  While baseball may still be our national pastime, it truly is a global sport.

Buying Guide

The purpose of this section is to give you some overall guidance and overview of the factors that may be important as you are shopping for your batting gloves.  While many of these gloves will look nearly identical on paper, some subtle differences may make one brand superior to another.  Our goal here is to help you identify those factors, and understand whether or not they are relevant in your purchasing decision.

We won’t go into a lot of detail in this section, but rather try to establish an overview on each of the key features and specifications of the batting gloves.  Given the fact that most of these gloves are very similar in price, pricing may not be the most important item as you make your choices.  We recommend that you focus on value – that combination of features and specification, along with price, that makes a particular glove the best purchase for you.

Washable

Washable

At some point, especially if you use your batting gloves while on the bases running, they are going to get dirty.  Besides the obvious grime like dirt and sweat, the gloves will also bear some level of abuse just from swinging.  Since most of these gloves are made primarily of leather, or at least contain significant amounts of it, shrinkage is a key factor.  Too much shrinkage and they may become too small and tight, and therefore unusable.

Adult/Youth

Adult/Youth

Some of the gloves in this review are specifically for youth players, while others are geared to adult players.  Sizes will, of course, vary based on the designated user of the batting gloves.  Make sure you choose the correct model for your size, and for the frequency that you will be using the glove.

Material

Material

Virtually all of these gloves will have some leather content, typically on the palm area, which is where you will grip the bat.  Some models will be made from all man-made fabrics, and durability may be a question in that case.  In addition to the leather, most gloves will use a nylon or lycra back panel.  This increases the flexibility and stretchability of the glove.  You will also see neoprene or polyurethane fabrics in some models.  There is no best fabric, but the key is ensuring good quality palm material to support your grip requirements.

Color

Color

Some of these models are available only in basic black or white, while others have upwards of twenty different designs and colors to choose from.  Color and design will not factor into the actual performance ratings of the batting gloves, but do influence the purchases, especially in the case of youth models.  One thing to look for with color is whether or not the dye is expected to be color-fast.  While that dark green camo pattern may look good on your glove, it won’t look so good if it bleeds through to your hands.

Durability

Durability

In researching this article, I saw an estimate that a good batting glove should be able to handle about one thousand swings in its lifetime.  You need to put this number in context to your own requirements.  If you play six innings once a week, your gloves should last quite a long time.  However, a major league player will play six games in one week quite often and will wear out a pair of gloves in no time.

A wider wheel, with its extra surface area, will be the most flexible in dealing with multiple terrains.
Closure

Closure

You will often see batters, even at the major league level, calling time out and adjusting their gloves in between pitches.

The ideal situation is for a batting glove to close tightly and stay closed during the course of the at-bat.

The main types of closures for batting gloves, at the point where they reach the wrists, are elastic fibers, Velcro strips, and a hook and loop closure system.  As the elastic continues to be stretched out, its overall ability to keep the glove in place will be reduced, resulting in a loose, sloppy fit.  Velcro closures are a step up over elastic closures and are quite common on many of these gloves.  They tend to give a good initial closure but may need frequent readjustments to keep them in the optimal position.  Some of the higher end gloves use a “hook and loop” closure, which is Velcro combined with a small hoop.  The Velcro threads through this hoop, which is then leveraged to get a tighter closure, then matched up will another Velcro strip to give a solid closure.

Measuring Size

Measuring Size

The sizes for the batting gloves are typical of most clothing types.  For both youth and adults, you will normally find the gloves available in small, medium, or large sizes.  Some models, however, will also add in an extra-small size, or an extra-large size for greater fit flexibility.  At the highest level, you can also find extra-extra-small and extra-extra-large sizes.

Note that there are two different ways to measure for glove size.  Make sure that the way you measure your hand size corresponds to the way the manufacturer sizes the gloves.  If possible, actually trying on the gloves is the best alternative.  Two common sizing tables are below:

batting gloves size table

batting gloves size table2

Padding/Insulation

Padding/Insulation

Some batting gloves will have additional padding across the palm area of the glove.  This padding helps to reduce the shock from hitting the baseball with the bat.  This shock can be especially noticeable while using metallic bats but is still apparent with wood bats.  You will also note some gloves offer insulation, which gives additional comfort and protection from extreme heat or cold.

Ventilation

Ventilation

Many of these gloves will feature small, pin-sized holes across the fingers, back, and occasionally palm of the glove.  These holes allow for additional ventilation to keep the hands from sweating as much as if they were completely sealed inside the glove.  You will also run across special wicking materials that will help absorb sweat and excess water.

Stitching and Seams

Stitching and Seams

In most cases, as a batting glove wears out, the initial damage will occur along the seams where the various materials have been sewn together.  These seams can be on either the inside or outside of the glove.  Examine the stitching to look for regularity in spacing and distance apart, thread thickness, and the actual size of the seam itself.  If the seam is excessively large, it may rub against the skin during swinging the bat and cause abrasions and blisters.  Larger seams may also affect the flexibility of the glove, impacting your ability to maintain your grip on the bat firmly.

Grip

Grip

Grip, after all, is the primary reason to wear batting gloves.  While they do offer some form of hand protection, their main purpose is to help you hold the bat tightly, without motion.  The grip may be enhanced by raised dimples in the material or even small holes.  Many gloves will use the natural grip strength of the leather to hold the bat in place.

Single VS. Pair

Single VS. Pair

While virtually every player will wear two gloves while batting and running the bases, most players will remove the one from their throwing hand when fielding.  While this would indicate that most gloves would be sold in pairs, there are some gloves out there (including one on this list) that sell gloves singly.  In this case, you will need to designate which hand will need the glove.  “Right-hand throw” indicates the glove will be worn on the left hand, while “left-hand throw” is the indicator for gloves worn on the right hand.

Price

Price

As we noted earlier, given the relatively tight price ranges represented here by these fourteen different batting gloves, the cost of the gloves may not be your primary consideration.  Fit and fitness of use most likely will take priority over the minor differences in price from one model to another, with durability also a key factor.  In any event, given this list of fourteen selections, you should have no difficulty finding a set of gloves that meets your needs and your budget.

So, this wraps up our overview of the key features, specifications, and functional characteristics that you should consider while picking out batting gloves.  In our next section, we will provide a detailed review of each individual model, noting our general impression of the glove, the primary features and specification, and the pros and cons of the gloves.

So, that wraps up the detailed reviews on fourteen different styles of batting gloves.  Two observations come to mind as a result of the research:

  • What one person likes about a pair of gloves, another will hate, and a lot of the issues come down to individual expectations. One person my rave because a glove lasted three months, another may rant for the same reason.
  • It’s very difficult to put a value rating against these gloves because of, frankly, illogical pricing practices. For example, in one model, six sizes are sold for $20, but a large adult size is sold for $25.  Depending on your hand size, the same glove may or may not be a good value for you.

Given those two caveats, here is a short summary of the “best ofcategories for these batting gloves.

Best Overall

Mizuno MVP Baseball Batting Gloves

Best Overall Honorable Mention

Rawlings Youth 5150 Batting Gloves

Each of these gloves offers good quality, durability, and fit.  I like the Mizuno on an overall basis, driven primarily by the reasonable price tag, innovative closure system, and a high percentage of five-star reviews.  Even though the Rawlings 5150 is only a youth glove, it demonstrates many of the same features, with a solid performance at a reasonable price point.  My only concern with these choices is the fairly low number of reviews, but the reputation of the manufacturers overcomes that.

Best Value

Franklin Sports MLB Digitek Batting Gloves

Best Value Honorable Mention

Seibertron B-A-R PRO 2.0 Signature Baseball

Each of these gloves has a solid quality review, and the pricing is almost identical.  The key differentiator for me is that the Franklin is the #1 seller on Amazon, and also the official batting glove of MLB.  You would not go wrong with either of these gloves.

Last, but not least:

Best Professional Model

Franklin Sports MLB CFX Pro Baseball Batting Gloves

This one has a heavy-duty design, evidenced by the double-stitching and strong closure system.  It is also MLB endorsed, and, while the price tag may point it to the serious player, it has enough quality reviews to consider it for even beginning players.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this review has given you some additional information that will help you make the right choice when purchasing your next pair of batting gloves.  Unlike some other equipment, the fit and feel of batting gloves will be a very individual experience, so make sure to look past the price and into the details of the specifications and features.  Happy hitting!
